M13 : Complete performance took Mumbai Indians to top of the table
Match 13 of this Dream 11 IPL 2020 was played at Abu Dhabi. Mumbai Indians vs Kings XI Punjab. Both teams were on 2 points and the win would take them to top of the table. Here's what happened in the match.
Kings XI Punjab won the toss and elected to bowl first. I am saying this in every match report and it is quite visible that batting first and runs on the board does have a significant effect in big grounds like Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Every expert in the commentary box is saying win the toss choose batting. But none of the teams are listening. Only they know why?
Kings XI Punjab bowlers tick all the boxes till 15th over. They picked up wickets in powerplay, in middle overs and didn't concede many runs. Their batsmen were looking to chase a target of around 160. But Rohit, Pollard and Pandya had different plans today. Rohit kept his calm at one end and kept rotating the strike. First Ishan Kishan 28(32) played alongside him and did look scratchy, but when you have a 4 time winning captain at the other end, you tend to get some valuable feedbacks between the overs. Whenever there were two three dot balls in the over, Rohit runs towards Ishan Kishan and told him to stay for longer period so that Mumbai Indians can launch their onslaught in the slog overs.
Rohit Sharma became the 3rd batsman in the IPL to cross 5000 runs mark. Suresh Raina and Virat Kohli are the other two. Rohit Sharma scored 70 off 45 with 8 fours and 3 sixes. After the wickets of Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma, there were two destructive batsmen on the crease and raring to go. Kings XI Punjab have the worst run rate in slog overs in this year's IPL. Hardik Pandya 30(11, 3 fours, 2 sixes) and Kieron Pollard 47 (20, 3 fours, 4 sixes) took advantage of some average bowling in the death as Mumbai Indians finished their innings at 191 for 4.
Kings XI Punjab openers were on the money so far in this tournament. Both KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal are top 2 run getters in this year's IPL. But today is the day when both openers failed. Mayank Agarwal 25(18) and Lokesh Rahul 17(19) can't score fifties and hundreds in every match. Their middle order needs to take some pressure off from their openers. Only Nicholas Pooran 44 (27, 3 fours, 2 sixes) looked like in the rhythm. Glenn Maxwell was in good touch in England Australia series, but couldn't connect bat with the ball in this match. He faced 18 balls for his 11 runs and its impossible to believe that Maxi didn't hit a single boundary out of 18 balls. Strange but true. Kings XI Punjab finished at 143 for 8 in 20 overs.
